Hypo Zero Bearded Dragons
The hypo zero bearded dragon is a fascinating and unique reptile that has captured the interest of reptile enthusiasts worldwide. Originating from the standard bearded dragon species, Pogona vitticeps, the hypo zero morph stands out due to its distinct characteristics and striking appearance. Unlike typical bearded dragons, hypo zero bearded dragons exhibit a lack of pigmentation, resulting in a nearly colorless, white or light grey appearance. This hypomelanistic trait, combined with the zero morph, gives these dragons their unique and captivating look.
The hypo zero bearded dragon is not just visually distinct but also boasts a friendly and docile temperament. These reptiles are known for their calm demeanor, making them excellent pets for both novice and experienced reptile keepers. Their social nature allows them to bond well with their owners, often enjoying being handled and interacting with humans. This combination of unique appearance and gentle behavior has significantly contributed to their popularity in the reptile community.
In terms of general behavior, hypo zero bearded dragons exhibit traits similar to other bearded dragon morphs. They are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day and sleep at night. Their activity levels and behavior can vary, but they typically enjoy basking under heat lamps, exploring their enclosures, and hunting for food. Proper care and attention to their habitat requirements are essential to ensure they thrive in captivity.
Overall, the hypo zero bearded dragon’s distinct appearance, combined with its friendly and social nature, makes it a sought-after pet among reptile enthusiasts. Understanding these basic characteristics helps to appreciate why hypo zero bearded dragons stand out and continue to be a popular choice for those looking to add a unique reptile to their collection.
Physical Characteristics
Hypo zero bearded dragons are a captivating morph known for their unique physical attributes. Typically, these reptiles reach an average length of 18 to 24 inches from head to tail, making them a medium-sized variant within the bearded dragon species. One of the most distinctive features of the hypo zero morph is their coloration. Unlike standard bearded dragons, hypo zero dragons exhibit a complete absence of pigmentation, resulting in a strikingly pale or almost white appearance. This lack of pigmentation is a defining characteristic and a key element that sets them apart from other morphs.
Additionally, hypo zero bearded dragons possess hypo-melanistic traits, meaning they have a reduced amount of melanin. This reduction in melanin results in lighter, more muted coloration and a general absence of dark patterns or markings. The hypo-melanistic trait also contributes to their smoother and more uniform skin tone, which can make them particularly appealing to reptile enthusiasts. Their eyes often appear lighter, and their nails are typically clear or very light in color, further enhancing their unique look.
Genetically, the hypo zero morph is a combination of two distinct traits: hypomelanism and the zero gene. Hypomelanism refers to the reduced melanin levels, while the zero gene is responsible for the complete lack of pigmentation. These genetic traits must both be present for a bearded dragon to be classified as a hypo zero. This specific genetic combination is relatively rare, making hypo zero dragons highly sought after in the pet trade and among breeders.
In summary, the hypo zero bearded dragon is distinguished by its pale, almost white coloration, reduced melanin levels, and clear nails, which together create a visually stunning and unique appearance. These physical characteristics, combined with their specific genetic makeup, make the hypo zero morph a fascinating subject for both enthusiasts and breeders alike.
Habitat and Environmental Needs
Creating an optimal habitat for a hypo zero bearded dragon is essential for their health and well-being. The enclosure size is a primary consideration; for an adult hypo zero bearded dragon, a minimum of a 40-gallon tank is recommended. However, larger enclosures, such as 75 to 120 gallons, provide more space for natural behaviors and are highly encouraged.
Lighting is another critical aspect. Hypo zero bearded dragons require both UVB and heat lamps. The UVB light should cover 50-75% of the enclosure and be replaced every six months, as its effectiveness diminishes over time. A basking light should be positioned to create a gradient of temperatures within the tank. The basking spot should reach temperatures between 95-110°F, while the cooler side should remain between 75-85°F. Nighttime temperatures can safely drop to around 65-75°F.
Maintaining proper humidity levels is also crucial. Hypo zero bearded dragons thrive in an environment with 30-40% humidity. Too much humidity can lead to respiratory issues, while too little can cause dehydration. Using a hygrometer to monitor levels and adjusting with misting or a dehumidifier as needed ensures a balanced environment.
When it comes to substrate, choosing the right material is vital to avoid impaction, a common health issue in bearded dragons. Reptile carpet, paper towels, or tiles are safe and easy to clean options. Loose substrates like sand or wood chips should be avoided as they pose ingestion risks.
By paying close attention to these habitat and environmental needs, owners can create a comfortable and healthy living space for their hypo zero bearded dragons. Ensuring the correct enclosure size, lighting, temperature, humidity, and substrate will not only promote their physical health but also enhance their overall quality of life.
Diet and Nutrition
Ensuring a balanced diet is paramount for the health and longevity of hypo zero bearded dragons. Their diet should consist of a variety of foods, including insects, vegetables, and fruits, to provide a comprehensive nutritional profile. This diversity mimics their natural feeding habits in the wild, promoting optimal well-being.
Primarily, insects such as crickets, mealworms, and dubia roaches should form a significant portion of their diet, especially for younger dragons. These insects are rich in protein, which is crucial for growth and development. It’s advisable to gut-load insects with nutritious foods before feeding, enhancing their nutritional value. Adult bearded dragons, however, should consume fewer insects compared to juveniles, as their protein needs decrease with age.
Vegetables and leafy greens are essential for hypo zero bearded dragons, offering necessary vitamins and minerals. Staple greens include collard greens, mustard greens, and dandelion greens. Additionally, vegetables like squash, bell peppers, and carrots should be included to add variety and ensure a balanced intake of nutrients. It’s critical to avoid feeding them spinach and beet greens frequently, as these contain oxalates that can bind calcium and inhibit its absorption.
Fruits should be offered sparingly, as they are high in sugar. Suitable options include berries, apples, and melons. While fruits can be a delightful treat, they should not constitute more than 10% of the overall diet to prevent potential health issues such as obesity and fatty liver disease.
Feeding frequency and portion sizes should align with the dragon’s age and size. Young bearded dragons require daily feeding, while adults can thrive on a feeding schedule of every other day. Portion sizes should be adjusted to avoid overfeeding and ensure the dragon maintains a healthy weight.
Supplements play a vital role in the diet of hypo zero bearded dragons. Calcium and vitamin D3 supplements are necessary to prevent metabolic bone disease. Dusting insects with these supplements a few times a week is recommended. Additionally, a multivitamin supplement can be provided once a week to ensure the dragon receives all essential nutrients.
Health and Common Issues
Maintaining the health of a hypo zero bearded dragon is crucial for ensuring a long and vibrant life. These unique reptiles, like other bearded dragons, can encounter several common health issues, and recognizing early signs of illness is essential for timely intervention. Preventive care, regular veterinary check-ups, and a well-balanced diet are key components in promoting their overall well-being.
One of the most prevalent health issues in hypo zero bearded dragons is metabolic bone disease (MBD). This condition arises due to inadequate calcium intake or improper UVB lighting. Symptoms may include lethargy, swollen limbs, and deformities in the spine or jaw. To prevent MBD, ensure your bearded dragon has a diet rich in calcium and is exposed to appropriate UVB lighting for 10-12 hours daily.
Respiratory infections are another common issue, often caused by improper humidity levels or a dirty habitat. Signs of respiratory infections include wheezing, mucus around the nose or mouth, and labored breathing. Maintaining a clean enclosure and monitoring humidity levels can significantly reduce the risk of these infections.
Parasites, both internal and external, can also affect the health of hypo zero bearded dragons. Symptoms of parasitic infections include weight loss, diarrhea, and a lack of appetite. Regular fecal examinations by a veterinarian can help detect and treat these issues promptly.
Additionally, be on the lookout for signs of impaction, which occurs when a bearded dragon ingests substrate or indigestible materials, leading to a blockage in their digestive system. Symptoms include loss of appetite, bloating, and lethargy. Ensuring a proper diet and using substrates like reptile carpet or paper towels can help prevent impaction.
Preventive care is fundamental in maintaining the health of your hypo zero bearded dragon. Regular veterinary check-ups, ideally every six months, can help catch potential health issues early. Moreover, providing a balanced diet consisting of appropriate insects and vegetables, along with proper hydration, will support their overall health.
By understanding common health issues and implementing preventive measures, you can ensure your hypo zero bearded dragon remains healthy and thrives in its environment.
Breeding Hypo Zero Bearded Dragons
Breeding hypo zero bearded dragons involves a meticulous process, requiring a comprehensive understanding of their genetic makeup and lifecycle. Selecting appropriate breeding pairs is crucial as it determines the health and characteristics of the offspring. To begin, breeders should choose a hypo zero male and a compatible female who also carries the hypo zero gene. Ensuring both dragons are healthy and free from genetic disorders is paramount to achieving successful breeding outcomes.
Understanding the breeding cycle of bearded dragons is essential. The breeding season typically commences in early spring and lasts until late summer. During this period, increased daylight hours and warmer temperatures stimulate the dragons’ reproductive instincts. Breeders should closely monitor the behavior of their dragons, looking for signs of readiness such as head bobbing, arm waving, and a change in coloration. Once the female exhibits these signs, she may be introduced to the male for copulation.
Caring for gravid females is a critical aspect of the breeding process. A gravid female will require a diet rich in calcium and other vital nutrients to support egg development. Additionally, providing a suitable laying area is essential. This can be achieved by creating a lay box filled with a moist substrate, allowing the female to dig and deposit her eggs comfortably. Post-laying, it is important to ensure the female receives adequate rest and nutrition to recover from the egg-laying process.
Incubation of the eggs is another key step in breeding hypo zero bearded dragons. The eggs should be carefully transferred to an incubator set at a consistent temperature of 82-86°F (28-30°C) with a humidity level of around 75%. The incubation period typically lasts between 55 to 75 days. During this time, it is vital to maintain stable environmental conditions to ensure successful hatching.
Finally, caring for hatchlings requires attention to detail. Once the eggs hatch, the baby dragons should be moved to a rearing enclosure with appropriate lighting, temperature, and humidity. Hatchlings need a diet of small insects and finely chopped vegetables to support their rapid growth. Regular monitoring of their health and development will help ensure they grow into healthy adult hypo zero bearded dragons.
Behavior and Handling
Hypo zero bearded dragons exhibit a variety of behaviors that are fascinating and essential for owners to understand. These reptiles are known for their docile nature, making them ideal pets for beginners and experienced reptile enthusiasts alike. Typically, hypo zero bearded dragons are active during the day and enjoy basking under a heat source. They are generally calm and can be quite social, often showing curiosity towards their human companions.
Interacting with hypo zero bearded dragons is relatively straightforward. They tend to recognize their owners and can form bonds over time. Regular handling from a young age can foster trust and reduce stress for the dragon. It is recommended to handle them gently and support their entire body to make them feel secure. Consistent, gentle interaction helps in taming and building a positive relationship with your bearded dragon.
Social habits of hypo zero bearded dragons include head bobbing, arm waving, and color changes, which are typical communicative behaviors. Head bobbing can signify dominance or a greeting, whereas arm waving is often a submissive gesture. Understanding these behaviors can enhance the bonding experience and help owners respond appropriately to their pet’s needs.
Common behavioral issues may arise, such as aggression or stress, which can usually be managed with proper care and attention. Providing an environment that mimics their natural habitat, with appropriate temperature gradients and hiding spots, can greatly reduce stress. If a bearded dragon exhibits signs of aggression, it is essential to assess their environment and ensure they feel safe and comfortable. Gradual and consistent handling can also mitigate aggressive tendencies.
In essence, understanding the behavior and handling of hypo zero bearded dragons is crucial for their well-being and for fostering a strong bond between the pet and owner. By observing their social cues and providing a supportive environment, owners can ensure a healthy and harmonious relationship with their bearded dragon.
Choosing and Purchasing a Hypo Zero Bearded Dragon
When choosing and purchasing a hypo zero bearded dragon, several key considerations ensure you bring home a healthy and well-adjusted pet. Begin by evaluating the physical health of the bearded dragon. Look for clear, bright eyes, smooth and unblemished skin, and an alert demeanor. A healthy hypo zero bearded dragon should exhibit strong, steady movements and a healthy appetite. Additionally, check for any signs of respiratory issues, such as labored breathing or discharge from the nose or mouth, as these could indicate underlying health problems.
Engage with breeders or sellers by asking pertinent questions to gauge their knowledge and the care provided to their animals. Inquire about the dragon’s age, diet, and any health issues it may have faced. Understanding the genetic background is crucial, especially for hypo zero morphs, so ask for details about the lineage and any genetic testing performed. Reputable breeders should be transparent and forthcoming with this information, demonstrating their commitment to the health and well-being of their reptiles.
It is paramount to purchase from reputable sources to ensure the quality and health of your hypo zero bearded dragon. Look for breeders or sellers with positive reviews, a history of ethical breeding practices, and a willingness to provide ongoing support and advice. Avoid impulse purchases from unverified sources, as these can often result in acquiring animals with hidden health issues or improper care histories.
Before bringing your new bearded dragon home, prepare an appropriate habitat. Ensure the enclosure is spacious, well-ventilated, and equipped with necessary heating, lighting, and substrate. Familiarize yourself with the dietary needs, as hypo zero bearded dragons require a balanced diet of insects and vegetables. Having everything ready in advance will help your new pet acclimate quickly and reduce stress.
By following these guidelines, you can confidently choose and purchase a healthy hypo zero bearded dragon, ensuring a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both you and your new pet.

I ordered a Hypo Zero and it took a little while to get here because it was a holiday weekend. When it arrived it was a little freaked out because of the journey and when I opened the bag that it was in it shot out lightning fast went up the wall across the shelves and hid underneath my workbench… Knowing reptiles as I do I cranked up the AC in my shop and the next morning it was not moving so fast so I was able to catch it and put it in a cage no problems. After I put it in an outdoor cage and gave it food and water it was a happy camper! My cats came up checking it out. All in all I am pleased with the purchase.

I have seen both good and bad reviews, and I’m shocked at the bad ones. This business is spot on, they answered every single email I sent to them (and I sent a lot, with questions, etc., etc.) I over paid, they refunded my money immediately. They were very helpful with the shipping process, and I received 3 healthy Hypo Zero. It was actually easier than purchasing at a pet store (Sunset Reptiles has a HUGE selection of species) and way better than a reptile show were the reptiles are handled and ogled at by everyone, but no-one buys. I will definitely be a returning customer, my first experience was fantastic.
Maybe all the bad reviews are from beginner reptile owners, or they think buying a reptile or arachnid is like ordering take out pizza. Its NOT that simple and Sunset takes care of all the little details.
Thank you Sunset, 3 different species, super healthy and bright eyed, from your tank to mine in less than 15 hours!
Amazing!!

GREAT COMPANY!!
Great company!
I ordered a beardie and a budgetts frog. They came to me fast but unfortunately the frog was dead when I got it but the beardie was healthy and okay!!
I advised the company asap about the frog’s demise and they wanted pictures of it which I had no problem doing. Any customer that’s honest will not hesitate to send pics if this company requests doa pics.
Once they had the pics they were very apologetic and refunded me the money for the frog. I didn’t get the shipping cost back and I didn’t expect to. It wasn’t there fault the frog didn’t make it.
I will order from them again. To me they are a trusted company! Thank you Sunset Reptiles!!

I bought a hatchling Hypo Zero. The beardie arrived healthy and active. I had questions about the feeding of the beardie and they responded quickly and professionally. The dragon ate the day after I received it.
Very happy with the purchase and customer service.
Craig Myers –
I bought 2 Hypo Zero and they are very happy after a week’s time. No problems with shipping and Sunset reptiles has been responsive to my questions. My only recommendation is for some type of info sheet included in the shipment. The Beardie arrived without anything else. An info sheet with tips and encouragement would be nice. One of the beardies was slow to respond and this is my first time taking care of a Beardie. So, I was a bit worried in the first few days. An info sheet might have allayed those fears and doubts. Of course, there’s the website…but when you are in front of your terrarium, the website isn’t necessarily handy. All in all, we are very happy with our new pets!!
